About This Course

Unlock your passion for game development in Roblox Studio, an immersive game engine that supports play on the web, mobile, and even virtual reality! You’ll explore the fundamentals of building a game from scratch—sculpting imaginative terrain, modeling 3D parts, and designing your own obstacle course (“obby”). Then, implement challenges like a fire spawning platform with built-in scripts created in Lua, the official coding language of Roblox. When you launch your first game for everyone to play and share online, you’ll take on the title of a Roblox developer!

Topics Covered

  • Create and publish games to the Roblox website
  • Explore game design fundamentals and build your own obby
  • Learn how to create developer products and monetize items
  • Implement checkpoints and custom challenges using built-in Lua scripts

Course Format

This course is part of a weeklong summer camp running Monday through Friday. Your child will learn in a lab on an inspiring university campus with a balanced daily schedule that allows for outdoor and recreational activities. Your child will learn from an experienced instructor in a small-group setting. Day and overnight options are available based on location.

Sample Schedule

Here’s a sample of what a week in this course could look like. Keep in mind students will progress at varying paces, and this is meant to serve as an outline of key materials and the overall experience.

Students will modify game terrain to create mountains, valleys, and rivers. Then, they’ll set up basic platforms for their obby, following level design principles.

Next, students add a built-in checkpoint system that saves player progress. Players who travel out of the game boundaries will respawn on the map!

Using the Toolbox, students will get creative and find unique elements to add to their game such as skyscrapers and cars. Then, they’ll create collectible items and unique obby challenges like fire spawning platforms!

In their games, students will learn how to create and monetize their own developer products, like a donation box where satisfied players can tip Robux after they’ve completed the game.

To complete the week, students will wrap up the design of their obby game, playtest it with their peers, and publish it to the official Roblox website, where everyone can join in on the fun!

Portfolio-Boosting Diploma & Transcript

At the conclusion of your child's course, they will receive an official iD Tech diploma and course transcript outlining the skills they learned over the course of the week.

Frequently Asked Questions

Simply, the obby is a Roblox staple! More specifically, an obby is an obstacle course game built within Roblox that can take the form of elaborate mazes, tall towers, and other engaging environments. An obby is fun to play, but even more fun to make! Learn more about how to make an obby in Roblox.

In a community of 1.9 million game developers, Roblox offers a wealth of inspiration to get kids thinking and creating. From activating game design skills to inspiring kids to code, learning with Roblox is as fun as it is educational and motivating.

While we are a tech program with the goal of transforming your child’s interests into real-world STEM skills, we are also a summer camp. Simply put, camp is a balance of learning and fun! Students learn in small groups in labs on a prestigious college campus and from expert instructors who are trained to inspire and engage.

Day camps kick off with icebreakers and team-building before jumping into coursework for most of the morning. When it’s time for lunch, your child will walk from the computer lab to the dining hall as they take in the beauty of campus. Students return to the learning labs in the afternoon for more coursework, followed by an afternoon break where they will have the chance to take part in outdoor game time and more campus discovery before wrapping up with instruction!

Overnighters work until dinner, and are then off to create deeper connections and memories while gaming, watching movies, and more. All together, days and nights are filled with learning and adventure that builds lifelong friendships.

Yes, this course is designed for beginner to advanced students. Our small class size ensures that each student receives individual attention and has the freedom to learn at their own pace. Instructors are trained to be in tune with students’ unique needs and provide a personalized learning experience.

In addition to valuable tech skills, kids and teens leave camp with new relationships, resilience, critical thinking opportunities, and an even greater love for tech (if that’s possible!).

At the conclusion of your child's course, they will receive a transcript outlining everything they learned over the week. They’ll also take home an iD Tech t-shirt, water bottle, and a USB with their course project files, along with access to installation and setup guides so they can continue working at their own pace.

If your child will be bringing a phone to camp, they’ll be able to access their device to update you on their adventures and take selfies with their new friends during break times.

While many kids can’t stop talking about their days at camp, others are kids of few words. Our camp staff are here to help, taking pictures of campers in action! Our photos page is regularly updated to showcase all of the fun taking place at camp.

During our Friday Family Showcase, loved ones get to see their camper’s final project while interacting with camp staff and learning about the week, skills gained, and more.
