About This Course

Machine learning enables computer scientists to push technology into the future with breakthroughs like Siri and self-driving cars. In this academy experience, you’ll explore advanced Python programming concepts through cryptography, such as complex puzzles and ciphers, and work with industry-standard tools to build neural networks.

Start with Python to design logic-based programs and sharpen your coding skills. Then, discover principles of modern cybersecurity and program algorithms to see how time-proven methods of cryptography, security, and encryption are still protecting information in the digital age. Building on your knowledge, you’ll learn how to turn numbers, text, images, and sounds into a scrambled stream—and put them all back together again. After you've received your security clearance, dive into navigating deep-learning methods with a machine learning model. You’ll utilize the Keras API developed by Google as you tweak your model and process data outputs to see your model’s learning improve alongside you. Furthermore, test your data science skills by collecting your own data to perform sentiment analysis. You can develop multiple neural networks from the ground up, like a text-driven recipe generator, and watch them learn in real time. Find your voice in this advancing computer science field!

Course Format 

This machine learning summer camp is part of an intensive 2-week program running Monday through Friday (overnight at most locations with the option to stay the weekend within the two weeks). Your teen will learn in a lab on an inspiring university campus with a balanced daily schedule of assignment-driven workshops and outdoor/recreational activities. Courses are led by experienced instructors in a small-group setting. Learn more below. 
 

Sample Schedule

With techniques used by industry professionals, students will build Python projects, create image recognition models, and analyze the different purposes of machine learning frameworks.

Here’s a sample of what a week in this machine learning course could look like! Please keep in mind that students will progress at varying paces; this is a general outline of key material and the overall student experience.

During the first week, students will learn the fundamentals of Python coding and cryptography. They’ll start by designing logic-based programs and sharpening their coding skills. Then, students will delve into cybersecurity using examples of real-world algorithms, from the basic Caesar cipher to the Advanced Encryption Standard maintained by the NIST. Finally, they’ll put their ideas into code with encryption techniques.

In the second week, students will explore machine-learning libraries and learn how to implement neural networks and image recognition models with the real-world databases. Then, they’ll cultivate their skills to analyze webpage data and build a sentiment analysis network from user reviews. To wrap up the week, students will finalize their networks and showcase the results of all of the projects they’ve created throughout this course.
