About This Course

Data scientists use machine learning to make breakthroughs in the future of technology—from facial recognition to voice assistants like Siri or humanoid robots at Hanson Robotics. In this academy experience, you’ll delve into the complexities of data science and neural networks.

Start with advanced Python concepts to sharpen your coding skills through cryptography. You’ll gain hands-on experience by developing logic-based programs, such as solving complex puzzles and ciphers. Learn how to turn numbers, text, images, and sounds into a scrambled stream—and put them all back together again! Then, build and train machine learning models with Google’s Teachable Machine. Utilize custom datasets to create image classification models like a sign language translator, emotion detector, or virtual drawing game. Through this, you’ll explore data science fundamentals by visualizing data, identifying patterns, and applying algorithms with essential tools like TensorFlow and Keras. Then, collaborate with your peers and culminate your work in a data-driven final project. You’ll experiment with techniques like text classification and data analysis to model predictions for real-world scenarios, such as building an all-star sports team on a limited budget. Develop your voice in this advancing computer science field!

Course Format 

This machine learning summer camp is part of an intensive 2-week program running Monday through Friday (overnight at most locations with the option to stay the weekend within the two weeks). Your teen will learn in a lab on an inspiring university campus with a balanced daily schedule of assignment-driven workshops and outdoor/recreational activities. Courses are led by experienced instructors in a small-group setting. Learn more below. 
 

Sample Schedule

With techniques used by industry professionals, students will build Python projects, create image recognition models, and analyze the different purposes of machine learning frameworks.

Here’s a sample of what a week in this machine learning course could look like! Please keep in mind that students will progress at varying paces; this is a general outline of key material and the overall student experience.

During the first week, students will learn the fundamentals of Python coding and cryptography. They’ll start by designing logic-based programs and sharpening their coding skills. Then, students will delve into cybersecurity using examples of real-world algorithms, from the basic Caesar cipher to the Advanced Encryption Standard maintained by the NIST. Finally, they’ll put their ideas into code with encryption techniques.

In the second week, students will explore machine-learning libraries and learn how to implement neural networks and image recognition models with the real-world databases. Then, they’ll cultivate their skills to analyze webpage data and build a sentiment analysis network from user reviews. To wrap up the week, students will finalize their networks and showcase the results of all of the projects they’ve created throughout this course.
