  • Skill Level: Intermediate-Advanced
  • Format: iD Tech Academies | Small-Group, On-Campus
  • Duration: Two-week program

About This Course

Global demand for AI-powered technology is on the rise, from Google searches with Gemini to AI-enhanced Instagram feeds. These systems are designed and managed by full-stack engineers who use advanced automation technology like SaaS with AI enhancements.

In this academy experience, you’ll build a browser-based application by developing a fundamental skillset in JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS. You’ll design a web interface for a prototype, such as a movie review database or a local pet adoption service. Then, by leveraging AI tools and frameworks like React, you’ll learn how to vibe code and enhance your project by integrating new features such as a smart chatbot or an engine to connect the entire system together.

Once your front-end system is set up, dive deeper into back-end engineering with tools like SQL for database management. You’ll host your application through a cloud service so you can share it with family and friends. Polish your capstone project to use for college applications, and you’ll be ready to launch your future career as a full-stack engineer with AI technical skills under your belt!

AI Usage
OpenAI is an industry leader in AI tools and agents. Students will integrate models to create custom AI features for their project, such as a chat interface or personalized engine.

You'll learn to:

  • Develop a browser-based application with full front-end and back-end systems, including a custom database
  • Use industry-standard languages and tools like JavaScript and SQL
  • Code and design web interfaces with HTML5 and CSS
  • Host your application with a cloud service and create a domain
  • Explore full-stack engineering principles and create a portfolio-worthy capstone project

Course Format

This course is part of an intensive 2-week summer program running Monday through Friday (overnight at most locations with the option to stay the weekend within the two weeks). Your teen will learn in a lab on an inspiring university campus with a balanced daily schedule of assignment-driven workshops and outdoor/recreational activities. Courses are led by experienced instructors in a small-group setting. Learn more below.

Students will learn the fundamentals of HTML5 and JavaScript to create interactive web elements, such as navigation menus, customized buttons, hover effects, or chat interfaces. They'll use CSS to design and style their browser-based applications, with their own custom-made theme. Then, they’ll add modern features by combining frameworks like React with AI tools for a strong front-end prototype for their capstone project.

In the second week, students will explore database management with SQL. They’ll learn how to store and retrieve data from browser applications, including account information like usernames and passwords, or a list of customized products like shirts with associated prices. Then, they’ll connect their front-end interface with the back-end system using a cloud service to host their application. To wrap up the week, students will showcase their capstone project, finishing strong with a solid understanding of full-stack engineering!

FAQ

This Academy course empowers teens to go beyond classroom learning and apply technology to some of today’s most pressing challenges. By combining coding, game development, engineering, and AI, they’ll gain exposure to the same tools and methods used by innovators shaping the future.

The fast-paced hackathon style of the program builds problem-solving, teamwork, and adaptability—skills that matter as much in college and careers as they do in tech. With a capstone project focused on sustainability and a polished pitch deck to showcase their ideas, students walk away with new technical skills, and leave with the mindset and experience of changemakers ready to make a real-world impact.

In the coming years, many companies like DeepMind and OpenAI hope to solve general artificial intelligence, which is a term for an AI that can learn and perform any task put in front of it. This breakthrough is likely still years in the future, but it has the potential to revolutionize how human beings interact with technology, the job market, and society in general.

In the shorter term, machine learning has practical business applications like analyzing large volumes of data, powering self-driving vehicles, and assisting medical diagnoses. As AI research advances, the number of tasks it can perform will only increase. Companies are already desperate for AI experts and aggressively hiring those with expertise in the field.

This course is taught by live iD Tech instructors who specialize in coding, game dev, robotics, and math, and are recruited from top universities like Stanford, Caltech, NYU, and Carnegie Mellon.

In addition to specialized skills, teens leave their academy with a new network of friends and mentors, resilience, critical thinking opportunities, and official certification that stands out to admissions officers.

At the conclusion of the academy experience, teens will receive an official iD Tech diploma and course transcript outlining everything they learned during the program. They’ll also take home a USB with their course project files, along with access to installation and setup guides so they can continue working at their own pace.
