With custom resource packs, you’ll visually alter the world players see, and as you build game design and pacing skills, you’ll create an experience that’s exciting and memorable. It's up to you to design the next great adventure that awaits in the world of Minecraft!

Tools: Minecraft Java Edition

Topics Covered

  • Create resource packs to re-skin blocks and items
  • Build redstone circuits and machines
  • Utilize command blocks to enhance maps
  • Develop planning and design skills

Sample Schedule

Using redstone and command blocks, students will create original Minecraft adventures and take their game design knowledge to new heights.

Here’s a sample of what a week in the course could look like! Please keep in mind that students will progress at varying paces; this is a general outline of key material and the overall student experience.

Students will explore command blocks and experiment with them with a variety of different machines.

Next, students will use wool blocks to create sounds signals and experiment with other special properties that sensors have. Students start building their obstacle course with sound-based traps.

Students continue building their command block skills and adding complexity to their Minecraft games.

As they continue to build their own Minecraft obstacle course games, students will ddd depth to their worlds with decorations and other customizations. These might include a starting area and a finish line, along with a rewards room for players who complete the course.

To complete the week, students will refine their map and playtest their peers' obstacle courses. Together, they will discuss their work and provide meaningful feedback for their peers.

Portfolio-Boosting Transcript

At the conclusion of your child's course, they will receive an official iD Tech transcript outlining the skills they learned over the course of the week.

Frequently Asked Questions

Redstone is a powerful Minecraft resource that bears redstone dust when mined, which is then used for redstone circuits, or electricity in the Minecraft world. Command blocks can add a customized feature or action to existing gameplay, like changing the weather. View more Minecraft terms.

This course encourages kids to think like game designers or programmers, rather than just players, opening doors to STEM. Minecraft game design promotes creativity, problem-solving, self-direction, and collaboration—all of which stand out as valuable benefits that gaming can provide.

The market value of the gaming industry is over $151.06 billion dollars, with steady growth predicted through 2027. Your child could be the next big name in game design, and if their STEM journey leads them elsewhere, they will still build valuable digital literacy skills. Tech literacy is key to success with 21st century skills, and yes those skills can be fun to learn!

Yes, this course is designed for beginner to advanced students. Our small class size ensures that each student receives individual attention and has the freedom to learn at their own pace.
