Course Format

This course is part of a weeklong virtual summer camp running Monday through Friday. Your child will learn online with a small group of other students, in sessions led by expert instructors. Each day includes two hours of live instruction and peer collaboration plus two hours of self-paced project development. Learn more below.

Sample Schedule

Here’s a sample of what a week in this course could look like. Keep in mind students will progress at varying paces, and this is meant to serve as an outline of key materials and the overall experience.

Students will dive into the principles of game design and plan a project. Then, they’ll begin to construct a level of their game by building a terrain of mountains, rivers, and other elements that complement their vision.

Next, students will dive into the fundamentals of coding with Lua by defining their own variables and functions. They’ll implement a checkpoint system that saves player progress and updates their respawn location as they reach checkpoints. Players who travel out of the game boundaries will respawn on the map.

Using custom Lua scripts, students will build interactive challenges for their games such as health-draining platforms or projectiles. From there, they’ll create and monetize developer products that players can purchase in-game with Robux, like a speed boost item.

In their games, students will add collectible items with a custom script and construct a leaderboard that displays the player’s running score, allowing for friendly competition.

To complete the week, students will wrap up the design of their game, playtest it with their peers, and publish it to the official Roblox website, where everyone can join in on the experience!

Portfolio-Boosting Transcript

At the conclusion of your child's course, they will receive an official iD Tech transcript outlining the skills they learned over the course of the week.

FAQ

In Roblox, monetization refers to earning money through their games by including special features, upgrades as in-game purchases, and more. For example, Roblox players can use Robux - the internal Roblox currency - to purchase something like a balloon to help them avoid a natural disaster, or a stronger sword as a weapon. Through these microtransactions, many kids have learned to turn their gaming passion into a lucrative enterprise.

In a community of 1.9 million game developers, Roblox offers a wealth of inspiration to get kids thinking and creating. From activating game design skills to inspiring kids to code, learning with Roblox is as fun as it is educational and motivating.
