About This Course

Go from player to game developer in this online version of our camp with Minecraft! Grab your shovel and dig into the world of Minecraft modding. You’ll design a mod with MCreator, where you can edit almost anything in your game, from custom biomes to enemy AI. Create pixel art to transform blocks and tools. Then, dive into advanced mods like armor and weapons! Craft a story for your adventure and load it up with overpowered armor sets or imaginative gear like a tater tot launcher! Swarm your players with heightened enemy mobs, then watch the chaos unfold as they battle their way to victory. With Minecraft modding, the only limit is your imagination!

Course Format

This Minecraft coding course is part of a weeklong virtual summer camp running Monday through Friday. Your child will learn online with a small group of other students, in sessions led by expert instructors. Each day includes two hours of live instruction and peer collaboration plus two hours of self-paced project development. Learn more below. 

Sample Schedule

Here’s a sample of what a week in this Minecraft coding class could look like. Keep in mind students will progress at varying paces, and this is meant to serve as an outline of key materials and the overall experience. 

Students will dig into the world of Minecraft modding with MCreator, where they’ll learn how to create custom tools, items, and textures. Then, they’ll test them in Minecraft.

Next, students will create custom biomes that set the scene for the rest of their project. After that, they’ll learn the basics of coding and experiment with MCreator's visual coding system to enhance their creations.

Time to customize! Students will design their own mobs with unique textures, loot tables, and possibly even custom animations! They’ll end the day by creating a game design document to help guide them during development.

Students will focus on building key mod components while learning how redstone and command blocks can upgrade their world. When finished, they’ll create a set of trading cards with images and information about their favorite creations.

To wrap up the week, students will polish and improve their mods with beta-testing feedback from their peers. Then, they’ll present their mod with their game design documents and what they've learned while building it.

Yes! Every iD Tech experience contributes toward leveling up along the iD Tech Pathway. This course is worth 625 XP— learn more about the iD Tech Pathway here.

To run this online course with iD Tech, students will need a Mac or Windows computer (no Chromebooks, unless otherwise specified), a webcam, and a stable internet connection with access to Zoom video conferencing. Additional info on course-specific installation requirements will be communicated after registration.

As courses frequently sell out, we recommend registering early to secure your child's spot. You can make unlimited changes with no fees up to 28 days before the start of your session. If you need to cancel before March 1st, you will receive a full refund of the amount paid. If you cancel after March 1st but still 28+ days before your session, you will receive a refund less the payment plan fee (if applicable) and the $375 per week deposit. Within 28 days of your session start date, changes are subject to a fee and no refunds are provided for cancellations.
