About This Course

Unity is the game engine trusted by developers. Nearly half of all console and PC games are made in Unity, including chart-topping titles like Hollow Knight and Fall Guys. In this online version of our camp, you’ll develop essential coding skills in Unity with C#. Write and integrate your own C# scripts to program and build a game. You’ll code core mechanics like player movement and item collection, and design a level for your players to explore—from spelunking an ancient temple and diving across traps to unlocking a hidden treasure room! Refine your scripts, then publish your game online to share with your friends. Launch your programming career here with Unity!

You'll learn to:

  • Develop and code a game in Unity
  • Learn fundamental C# syntax and write custom game scripts
  • Use variables, functions, and conditions to program game mechanics
  • Design levels and sprites

Course Format

This course is part of a weeklong virtual summer camp running Monday through Friday. Your child will learn online with a small group of other students, in sessions led by expert instructors. Each day includes two hours of live instruction and peer collaboration plus two hours of self-paced project development. Learn more below. 

Sample Schedule

Here’s a sample of what a week in this course could look like. Keep in mind students will progress at varying paces, and this is meant to serve as an outline of key materials and the overall experience. 

Programmers, unite! Students will start with an introduction to Unity. Then, they’ll explore the fundamentals of C# through console-based projects that use variables, if statements, and loops.

Dive deeper into C# with functions and arrays! Using C# and Unity together, students will create player movement and interactions. They’ll implement triggers, collisions, and gravity to make a jumping mechanic.

Next, students will develop core mechanics using C#, such as destroying enemy objects. They’ll design combat systems and display UI elements through code.

Students will implement more advanced functionality for projects, including additional scenes and transitions. Then, they’ll design a level and add custom visuals to polish the project.

To wrap up the week, students will add finishing touches to their final projects and showcase them. They’ll also have the opportunity to upload their project online to share with the world!

By combining a gamer’s eye for design and game mechanics with Unity programming, kids can level up their STEM skills.

While we are proud to offer world-class experiences on many of the world’s most prestigious university campuses, we also recognize that many families need the flexibility of quality virtual learning! It’s with these families in mind that we’ve adapted the core elements of our flagship camps to an online format with our Virtual Tech Camps. 

Like our on-campus programs, Virtual Tech Camps feature structured small-group sessions led by expert instructors. Each week includes live teaching of our signature, cutting-edge curriculum, plus peer collaboration, social time, and independent project work. To complete the experience, our Virtual Tech Camps incorporate all the magic of summer camp including games, challenges, and legendary iD traditions!

Yes, this course is designed for beginner to advanced students. Our small class size ensures that each student receives individual attention and has the freedom to learn at their own pace.

To run this online course with iD Tech, students will need a Mac or Windows computer (no Chromebooks, unless otherwise specified), a webcam, and a stable internet connection with access to Zoom video conferencing. Additional info on course-specific installation requirements will be communicated after registration.

Yes! Every iD Tech experience contributes toward leveling up along the iD Tech Pathway. This course is worth 750 XP— learn more about the iD Tech Pathway here.

As courses frequently sell out, we recommend registering early to secure your child's spot. You can make unlimited changes with no fees up to 28 days before the start of your session. If you need to cancel before March 1st, you will receive a full refund of the amount paid. If you cancel after March 1st but still 28+ days before your session, you will receive a refund less the additional fees (if applicable) and a $250 cancellation charge per week. Within 28 days of your session start date, changes are subject to a fee, and no refunds are provided for cancellations.
