  • Age: 10 - 12
  • Skill Level: Beginner–Advanced

About This Course

Creators flock to YouTube to show off their stories and vision through videos and commentary. But creating is more than just pressing the upload button. You'll need skills in some of the most powerful industry-wide programs in the Adobe Suite, from Photoshop and Animate to Premiere and beyond. Next time you have an idea, you’ll have the ability to follow through and bring it to life.

Tools: Adobe Creative Cloud, YouTube

Topics Covered

  • Design art and animation using drawing fundamentals
  • Practice visual storytelling through concepts and planning
  • Develop a digital portfolio
  • Create a unique online brand

Sample Schedule

Here’s a sample of what a week in the course could look like. Please keep in mind that students will progress at varying paces; this is a general outline of key material and the overall student experience.

Students will design a unique character and create a YouTube channel logo in Adobe Photoshop.

As students progress, they’ll learn the fundamentals of animation in Adobe Animate, including how to customize and animate a rigged puppet of a personal character.

To add dimension to their videos, students will animate a character to a custom sound file. Then, they’ll sketch out storyboards for their final project.

As they work towards a polished final project, students will edit and refine their videos in Adobe Premiere and incorporate animation and sound.

To complete the week, students will upload video projects to YouTube and create a portfolio of all of the work created this week.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sure, YouTube can be those things, but think about the person behind the video—what kinds of videos are they making, how are they creating those videos, and why are they spending time and resources to do so? Some top YouTube channels are in place to educate, others to entertain; some aim to monetize…and some, all of the above! Thus, YouTube offers a lot more than what initially meets the eye.

Most people have heard of STEM, but what about STEAM? By combining video editing, writing an awesome script, and the countless other techniques that go into YouTube streaming, kids can blend their interests across the humanities and STEM disciplines.

2 billion logged-in users visit YouTube every month: that translates to a lot of exciting careers and monetization opportunities! Whether your child wants to become the next streaming sensation or is looking to dip their toe in the water of a new STEAM hobby, learning to create great content can open doors to studying film, graphic design, monetizing an online business, and much more.
