About This Course

Learn to Think Like an Engineer™ when you dive into the immersive world of Mark Rober’s CrunchLabs® at camp! You'll explore how engineers design, build, and iterate when tackling real-world problems. Every day kicks off with a video from Mark Rober himself to guide you through a unique CrunchLabs® Build Box, all selected to spark your curiosity and stack new skills as the week progresses. After mastering the engineering principles behind each build, you'll team up with your fellow campers to tackle collaborative challenges, combining math, science, and creativity to push your designs to the limit. At the end of each day, you’ll take home your completed builds to proudly show off what you learned and continue tinkering on your own.

Course Format 

This course for kids is part of a weeklong summer camp running Monday through Friday. Learning sessions will be held in a lab on an inspiring university campus. Your child will be placed within a small group and guided by an experienced instructor. Daily schedules are balanced and allow for outdoor and recreational activities.

Sample Schedule

Here’s a sample of what a week in this course could look like. Keep in mind students will progress at varying paces, and this is meant to serve as an outline of key materials and the overall experience. 

Students will explore engineering and science concepts through exclusive video content from Mark Rober and the Flywheel Motorcycle Build Box™ kit. Next, they’ll tackle challenges that boost their understanding of rotational energy to keep the speed steady and crank up the torque.

Students will continue to build on their skills with the Magnification Station Build Box™ kit, which uses a lens and mirror to bend light and magnify tiny details—letting them examine the veins in a leaf or the patterns on a dollar bill up close. They'll also take on a spy mission, analyzing secret messages that can only be read by their magnification station.

Next, students will learn about encryption with the Cipher Machine Build Box™ kit, which lets them see ciphering in action—turning text into a scrambled stream of letters and then using the right key to decipher their message. They’ll practice by encrypting their own names, solving fun facts, and finally applying these skills to advance their spy mission.

Students will explore energy and motion with the Turbine Top Build Box™ kit, using a simple balloon to power a spinning top. They’ll build on this knowledge by teaming up with classmates to pass the spinning top or play an adapted version of the egg-and-spoon race, demonstrating how energy and the laws of motion create movement as the air escapes.

To wrap up the week, students will work on the Hover Puck Build Box™ kit and, with the help of their parents, demonstrate how a cushion of air reduces friction as their pucks glide smoothly—coming to a stop only when a ping pong ball intervenes.

What’s in a CrunchLabs® Build Box?

A CrunchLabs® Build Box contains a build-it-yourself engineering kit that becomes a functional invention when completed. Each box teaches a core STEM principle through hands-on construction and guided challenges that encourage testing, iteration, and problem-solving. At camp, each Build Box is the day’s main project focus, and goes home with your child so learning can continue!

FAQ

Even as a former NASA engineer, Mark hasn't figured out how to teleport to all 59 camp locations (yet!). While he'd love to attend in person, his influence is a major part of the camp experience! Each day will begin with a video from Mark to guide kids through a CrunchLabs® Build Box™—all selected to spark curiosity and stack their skills as the week progresses.

 

Yes, this camp will still be valuable! Campers who are in Year 1 or Year 2 of their Build Box subscription will experience entirely new materials. For those in Year 3 of the subscription, there may be a build or two that overlap, but all of the afternoon challenges will be completely unique to iD Tech.

While we are a tech program with the goal of transforming your child’s interests into real-world STEM skills, we are also a summer camp. Simply put, camp is a balance of learning and fun! Students learn in small groups in labs on a prestigious college campus and from expert instructors who are trained to inspire and engage.

Day camps kick off with icebreakers and team-building before jumping into coursework for most of the morning. When it’s time for lunch, your child will walk from the computer lab to the dining hall as they take in the beauty of campus. Students return to the learning labs in the afternoon for more coursework, followed by an afternoon break where they will have the chance to take part in outdoor game time and more campus discovery before wrapping up with instruction!

Overnighters work until dinner, and are then off to create deeper connections and memories while gaming, watching movies, and more. All together, days and nights are filled with learning and adventure that builds lifelong friendships. 

Yes, this course is designed for beginner to advanced students. Our small class size ensures that each student receives individual attention and has the freedom to learn at their own pace. Instructors are trained to be in tune with students’ unique needs and provide a personalized learning experience. 

At the end of each day, students will take home their completed builds to proudly show off what they learned and to continue tinkering on their own. Then, at the conclusion of your child's session, they will receive an iD Tech diploma as well as a transcript outlining everything they learned over the week. They’ll also take home a USB with their course project files, along with access to installation and setup guides so they can continue working at their own pace.

Yes! Every iD Tech experience contributes toward leveling up along the iD Tech Pathway. This course is worth 1,000 XP— learn more about the iD Tech Pathway here.

Yes! You can register today for as little as $375 per student, and pay the balance in convenient monthly installments. You can save $50 by registering for multiple sessions, and you can earn $25 in credit for each new friend referral (your friend saves $25 when they sign up too!). 

As courses frequently sell out, we recommend registering early to secure your child's spot. You can make unlimited changes with no fees up to 28 days before the start of your session. If you need to cancel before March 1st, you will receive a full refund of the amount paid. If you cancel after March 1st but still 28+ days before your session, you will receive a refund less the additional fees (if applicable) and a $250 cancellation charge per week. Within 28 days of your session start date, changes are subject to a fee, and no refunds are provided for cancellations.

If your child will be bringing a phone to camp, they’ll be able to access their device to update you on their adventures and take selfies with their new friends during break times.

While many kids can’t stop talking about their days at camp, others are kids of few words. Our camp staff are here to help, taking pictures of campers in action! Our photos page is regularly updated to showcase all of the fun taking place at camp.

During our Friday Family Showcase, loved ones get to see their camper’s final project while interacting with camp staff and learning about the week, skills gained, and more.
