Step directly into the world of game design with virtual reality and the Meta Quest 2 VR headset. You'll envision, build, and playtest a game with rules entirely designed by you. Start by crafting a playable paper prototype–no coding required–to test your ideas and explore game design fundamentals. Then, construct custom assets in Unity, an industry-standard 3D game engine, and simulate gameplay in VR. Create the game of your dreams, whether that's a card game with dice, an inventive Dungeons and Dragons-inspired tabletop game with moving pieces, or anything you can imagine! You'll design your own 3D world and game objects and, using the powerful Meta Quest 2, explore your game in vivid virtual reality. Play, collaborate, and kickstart your game design career with this incredible VR experience under your belt. You'll bring home your game prototype with you at the end of the course that you can play again and again with your friends and family!

Course Format

This course is part of a weeklong summer camp running Monday through Friday. Learning sessions will be held in a lab on an inspiring university campus. Your child will be placed within a small group and guided by an experienced instructor. Daily schedules are balanced and allow for outdoor and recreational activities. Day and overnight options are available based on location.

Sample Schedule

Here’s a sample of what a week in this course could look like. Keep in mind students will progress at varying paces, and this is meant to serve as an outline of key materials and the overall experience.

Students will learn how to use and navigate Unity and the VR headset. They’ll start with building a car prefab and creating their first Unity project.

Next, students will work in MagicaVoxel and learn about world design to create a more complex and unique scene for their project.

With their scene designed, students will start adding interactable objects and obstacles with VR Builder. They’ll learn the fundamentals of writing code.

Let the final project begin! Students will expand on their knowledge with VR Builder and finalize their project for the week.

Time to wrap up! Students will add their finishing touches and showcase all of their work from the week with their peers.

FAQ

Augmented reality (AR) adds digitized enhancements to what users see as they experience daily life; some examples of augmented reality include Pokémon GO, phone camera filters, and some features on Google Maps.

As video games get more and more advanced, they’re beginning to look as visually sophisticated as blockbuster films. That means there is a lot going on behind the scenes! By combining a gamer’s eye for design and game mechanics with Unity programming, kids can level up their STEM skills.

While we are a tech program with the goal of transforming your child’s interests into real-world STEM skills, we are also a summer camp. Simply put, camp is a balance of learning and fun! Students learn in small groups in labs on a prestigious college campus and from expert instructors who are trained to inspire and engage.

Day camps kick off with icebreakers and team-building before jumping into coursework for most of the morning. When it’s time for lunch, your child will walk from the computer lab to the dining hall as they take in the beauty of campus. Students return to the learning labs in the afternoon for more coursework, followed by an afternoon break where they will have the chance to take part in outdoor game time and more campus discovery before wrapping up with instruction!

Overnighters work until dinner, and are then off to create deeper connections and memories while gaming, watching movies, and more. All together, days and nights are filled with learning and adventure that builds lifelong friendships.

Yes, this course is designed for beginner to advanced students. Our small class size ensures that each student receives individual attention and has the freedom to learn at their own pace. Instructors are trained to be in tune with students’ unique needs and provide a personalized learning experience.

In addition to valuable tech skills, kids and teens leave camp with new relationships, resilience, critical thinking opportunities, and an even greater love for tech (if that’s possible!).

At the conclusion of your child's course, they will receive a transcript outlining everything they learned over the week. They’ll also take home an iD Tech t-shirt, water bottle, and a USB with their course project files, along with access to installation and setup guides so they can continue working at their own pace.

Yes! You can register today for as little as $250 per student, and pay the balance in convenient monthly installments. You can save $50 by registering for multiple sessions, and you can earn $25 in credit for each new friend referral (your friend saves $25 when they sign up too!).

As courses frequently sell out, we recommend registering early to secure your child’s spot. You can make unlimited changes - with no fees - up to 14 days before the start of your session. If you need to cancel, you will receive a refund of the amount paid, less the payment plan fee (if applicable) and the deposit of $250 per week. No refunds are provided for cancellations made within 14 days of the start of your session.

If your child will be bringing a phone to camp, they’ll be able to access their device to update you on their adventures and take selfies with their new friends during break times.

While many kids can’t stop talking about their days at camp, others are kids of few words. Our camp staff are here to help, taking pictures of campers in action! Our photos page is regularly updated to showcase all of the fun taking place at camp.

During our Friday Family Showcase, loved ones get to see their camper’s final project while interacting with camp staff and learning about the week, skills gained, and more.

With online options including virtual camps, teen academies, and private lessons, there is a program that fits your child’s interest, skill level, goals, and importantly, schedule. Inspiring instructors, customized curriculum, and topics your child can’t get enough of—sound familiar? Everything there is to love about our in-person summer camps, taught online, live by our elite instructors. Learn more
