Course Description

Discover two essential components on the path to professional game development: Autodesk Maya and Unreal Engine 4. Start by creating original 3D art assets with Autodesk Maya, then import your assets into Unreal Engine 4. Create new events, rules, and game types with UE4's Blueprint Visual Scripting System. Whether you're looking to study game design in college or launch your own game studio, this is where it starts.

What Will Students Take Home?

Students will take home all project files from both Autodesk Maya and Unreal Engine 4, including custom textures, audio, and Photoshop files.

Additional Course Information

Autodesk Maya is used by the iD Game Design & Development Academy for modeling and animating 3D characters. This 3D modeling, animation, rendering and visual effects software offers artists an end-to-end creative workflow. It combines sets, advanced matchmoving capabilities and high dynamic range compositing into a single powerful, integrated 3D modeling, animation, effects and rendering solution.

Unreal Engine 4 is a fully integrated suite of cutting-edge 3D game development tools used to make many of today's most popular PC, console and mobile games. Students taking this course will learn how to work with the same award-winning toolset behind the famed Unreal Tournament series, the blockbuster Gears of War franchise, and the groundbreaking Infinity Blade line of mobile games. Unreal Engine 4 is used by game developers, researchers, television studios, machinima directors, artists, and students. From entertainment software to architectural visualization to animated content, Unreal Engine 4 provides the platform and tools needed to develop cutting-edge 3D projects.

Dedicated gamers and game developers will be introduced to a variety of tactics and strategies designed by our curriculum and faculty experts. You'll head home with considerable modeling knowledge as well as new game design skills and a better understanding of underlying game mechanics. You'll never look at games the same way again!

What Will Students Learn?

Students Will Learn to:

  • Build levels and environments out of geometry
  • Place actors such as lights, weapons, and meshes
  • Create and use custom textures
  • Use Blueprints visual scripting to create moving objects
  • Create assets such as tables, chairs, and other environmental objects
  • Unwrap and texture models to make unique appearances
  • Bring the models created into the Unreal designed world

Realistic texturing with Adobe Photoshop and working with UV layouts will round out your introduction.

Week Two: Utilizing the comprehensive Unreal Engine 4 toolkit and its advanced menus and brush tools, you’ll learn level design creation and how to import your custom objects from Autodesk Maya, as well as set-up event triggers in a 3D game environment. Discover the strategies behind texture and lighting techniques in order to convey mood and establish story.

8:1 Staff Ratio Guarantee

We guarantee small class sizes, with a maximum of 8 students per instructor. At iD, our teaching philosophy is premised on personalization—your path, at your pace. Passionate, all-adult instructors guide you through tailored curriculum with one-on-one teaching. The immersive environment is ideal for fostering creativity and allowing you to reach your learning potential. Read more about our 8:1 iD Guarantee.

Two-week, Intensive Courses | High-Level Curriculum

Our 2-week courses at the Academy provide you with the right amount of time to get comfortable in your field of study and put your knowledge to use with hands-on projects. You'll have ample time to work on your online portfolio, enjoy excursions and tours of nearby facilities, relax with late-night gaming tournaments, and explore campus (Weekend Stays optional).

Other Activities

You can expect roughly 6-7 hours a day of instruction, with plenty of time for campus excursions, socializing, outdoor activities, video game tournaments, and more. Parents want peace-of-mind and student supervision—teens want a taste of independence. We work hard to provide the right balance. We hope to make your experience valuable and memorable.

All-Adult Staff

Our entire staff is comprised of adults ages 18 and over. We do not hire Counselors-in-Training (CITs) at our summer technology camps. We believe you learn best from adults who have mastered their technology skills. Some of our instructors are tech industry professionals. Others are graduate and undergraduate students majoring in the fields of computer science, engineering, app development, film, and other related fields. We’re extremely selective when it comes to our summer staff.

Friday Launch Party for Families

On the last day of the two-week program during the Launch Party, instructors present each student with a personalized iD Tech Diploma and recap students' key accomplishments. Afterwards, students unveil their final projects to parents and siblings, demonstrating all that they learned in just two weeks at the Academy.
