About the Tacoma Area

Tacoma, once nicknamed the "City of Destiny" due to its status as the western terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad, is situated atop Puget Sound, approximately 32 miles southwest of Seattle. It is the 2nd largest city in the Puget Sound Area, and the 3rd largest city in the state of Washington, serving as a port for international trade via Commencement Bay. Tacoma and its immediate surroundings have been ranked one of the "most livable areas in the U.S." and the area is also regarded as a prime destination for those who enjoy walking. The city's largest park, Point Defiance Park, encompasses the "Scenic Five Mile Drive," enabling access to the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium, Owen Beach, Camp Six, and Fort Nisqually. The park contains numerous structures of historical significance including the Pagoda, which once served as a streetcar waiting room. Additionally, Downtown Tacoma has been revitalized in recent years, bringing to life many new museums, theaters, shops, and restaurants.
