Smart Tech Meets Serious Style with the Nailbot: Preemadonna Visits Alexa Café

iD Tech in action

When Pree Walia and Casey Schulz, co-founders and heads of startup Preemadonna, visited Alexa Café held at Palo Alto High School last week, the enthusiasm from our students was palpable. It's not every day young girls come face to face with such inspiring female tech entrepreneurs!

Preemadonna is known for their remarkable "Nailbot," a small machine that syncs up with a user's smartphone in order to print custom designs on the fingernails. Sounds futuristic, right? It's also very appealing to young fashion aficionados looking to express their personal style.

As Pree and Casey shared the creative process that took their product from basic idea, to conceptual design, to prototype, to full-fledged startup company, our girls asked question after question, digging deeper into the duo's entrepreneurial journey. Pree and Casey also described their 4-month stay in Shenzhen, China through the Hax hardware accelerator program, which provided the opportunity for them to further develop the Nailbot. Our students were excited about the Nailbot and intrigued by steps needed to bring to life something so totally unique, creative, and open-ended.

According to their company's mission statement, both Pree and Casey view Preemadonna as a movement and believe that "Preemadonnas are inventors, artists, engineers, designers, athletes, teachers, leaders, mentors, hackers and showstoppers" of all shapes, sizes, ages, and races. They also feel that "being smart and feeling beautiful are not a contradiction." Definitely on board with that.

"We believe that being smart and feeling beautiful are not a contradiction." -Preemadonna, Mission Statement

Preemadonna is preparing to crowdfund and launch the first resale version of their Nailbot later this year. In the meantime, the company is making sure that girls across the country that want to bring the Nailbot to life get early access to the first Nailbots available! They have created an Ambassador program for girls that are artists, hackers, and social bees that want to get more involved. Our students at Alexa Café held at Palo Alto High School got the first peek of the Nailbot and the Ambassador program. Others can sign up here for more details.

We are confident that Preemadonna's Nailbot will continue to capture the attention of fashionistas and aspiring techies around the Bay Area and beyond, and we're thrilled to have had the opportunity to meet Pree and Casey out at camp. Thanks for the inspiration, ladies!

Alexa Café is our all-girls program for ages 10–15, creatively combining STEM subjects with leadership, entrepreneurship, brand identity, philanthropy, and more, in a fresh, inviting setting.
