Go Green With Arbor Day Party Ideas

iD Tech in action

Arbor Day is upon us again! A day to celebrate...trees? Unfortunately, most people probably don’t think too much about Arbor Day – trees are something that shed leaves in the fall, scrape against windows in storms, and bloom beautifully in spring – and that’s about it.

But this Arbor Day, we want to remind you of the importance of trees. (And yes, even though we are a tech camp, we still believe in the outdoors and the importance of a balanced camp experience. Don't believe those computer camp myths!) Trees provide shade and air, play a vital part in ecosystems and topography, and so much more.

So how can we give trees the attention they deserve for all their hard work? Well, when I think recognition, I think party. And who wouldn't want more time for fun? So, throw an Arbor Day party!  Aside from being an excellent excuse to get together with your friends and family, an Arbor Day party can provide lots of opportunities for creative tree-themed fun.

First idea. If you have children to entertain this Arbor Day, how about a tree scavenger hunt? It's an idea from a creative mom who put together a booklet to get her sons to explore the neighborhood in search of native trees. Something like this will take some research on your part to put together, but there’s nothing quite like smiles on children’s faces when they get to head outside, run around, and discover nature in a new, fun, and interactive way. We all love some form of gamification, right?

For those of you who don't have enough different kinds of trees in your area, there are plenty of different tree-related activities for young kids! Everything from exploring the texture of bark to learning how leaves get water, to simple arts and crafts, there’s an activity for every age, skill level, budget, and environment.

And of course, all those activities are bound to give children an appetite. Try this original and healthy tree snack! Some cucumber, an apple, and pretzels are all it takes to create this adorable snack. You can even stick the pieces to the plate with some peanut or almond butter for a shot of protein.

What about older kids or adults? This awesome blog has ideas for Earth-themed decorations (okay, there’s still kid-related party favors in there too. Just change up the contents of the bag for bigger kids!) Best of all, these ideas are all do-able on a budget...what’s more Earth-friendly than not wasting resources?

Lastly, if you don’t want to have an Arbor Day themed party, you can of course celebrate the old-fashioned way: plant a tree! There are plenty of opportunities to give back to your local treescape. Head on over to the Arbor Day Foundation for more information and resources on how to choose, plant, and care for a tree.

This year, while we won't be partying, iD Tech will be celebrating once again with our One Camper, One Tree initiative. Not familiar? For every camper who attends one of our summer programs, we plant one tree. Since 2011, over 100,000 trees have been planted, with over 40,000 seedlings to take root in 2015. You can help by enrolling in any iD Tech summer program – but hurry, space is filling up quickly!

However you celebrate Arbor Day this year, we hope you join us in making our future a little bit greener.
