COURSE DESCRIPTION

Gain new skills in programming and electronics engineering—and take home your very own Arduino™ Starter Kit. Arduino™ is a ground-breaking, open-source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible, easy-to-use hardware and software. The Arduino™ board can read sensors, control motors and lights, and upload your hand-built code that interacts in the real world. Learn the Arduino™ programming language, which is based on C/C++. After interpreting its environment by reading sensors, Arduino™ can execute your code and affect its surroundings by controlling lights, motors, and other actuators. What revolutionary tool will you invent?

There are no prerequisites for this teen programming camp, except for the desire to learn basic engineering or programming and create your own applications.

Our ever-evolving curriculum is designed for beginner to intermediate learners. Personalized instruction allows students to move along at their own pace, and customized lessons provide fun and appropriate challenges. Instructors work closely with students and adjust the curriculum to fit their progress and their project goals.

TWO-WEEK INTENSIVE COURSES | HIGH-LEVEL CURRICULUM 

Our 2-week courses at the Academy provide you with the right amount of time to get comfortable in your field of study and put your knowledge to use with hands-on projects. You’ll have ample time to work on your online portfolio, enjoy excursions and tours of nearby facilities, relax with late-night gaming tournaments, and explore campus (Weekend Stays optional).

Week 1: You’ll get started by exploring the Arduino™ environment, learning the functionality and purpose of the wide variety of potential components and accessories, then jump into coding your first Arduino™ program. Once you are familiar with the basics, you’ll gear up quickly and learn digital inputs, reading digital outputs, and pulse-width modulation, as well as reading analog sensors and using variable resistors. Along the way, you’ll create mini-projects to see your Arduino in action.

Week 2: Diving into environmental controls, you’ll start using transistors, driving DC motors, driving servo motors, and learning when to use them. Making sounds and tones, using speakers and creating sound sequences will be our next stop, before moving on to tackle a major feature of Arduino™ boards, USB and Serial communication, including listening and talking to the Arduino™. Shift registers and interfacing with Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD) will be covered. Advanced topics may include hardware interrupts, timer interrupts, data logging, and connecting Arduino to the internet.

ADULT-ONLY STAFF, NO COUNSELORS-IN-TRAINING

Our entire staff is comprised of adults ages 18 and over. We do not hire Counselors-in-Training (CITs) at our summer technology camps. We believe you learn best from adults who have mastered their technology skills. Some of our instructors are tech industry professionals. Others are graduate and undergraduate students majoring in the fields of Computer Science, Computer Engineering, App Design, Film, and other related fields. We’re extremely selective when it comes to our summer staff.

THE ACADEMY EXPERIENCE

UNIVERSITY IMMERSION

Teens experience independent college life in a supervised environment. This pre-college program is overnight-only, so teens stay in real college dorms, eat in dining halls and get a feel for daily life on campus. Choose the recommended Weekend Stays option to have even more time to explore campus and local attractions.

SOFTWARE REPOSITORY SYSTEM UTILIZATION

iD Programming Academy students will use professional, industry-standard tools while at the Academy, including software repositories. These cutting edge technologies allow aspiring programmers to collaborate, share projects, and work in real-world coding environments. Students will not only learn to revise code and push it to the repository while in session, but also have full download access to retrieve their projects after their session. Establishing a repository sets our participants apart from their peers on college and internship applications.

CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS

How are Academy courses different from the courses at iD Tech Camps?

Academy courses are 2-week, overnight-only programs (at most locations) for teens ages 13-18 (Weekend Stays optional). Students in the iD Game Design & Development Academy and iD Film Academy build online portfolios in addition to completing a final project. Students in iD Programming Academy utilize software repository systems and graduate with full access to their code. All Academy students have the opportunity to tour a nearby studio. Our Academies provide an intensive, pre-college experience. Comparatively, iD Tech Camps offers weeklong day camps and overnight camps for students ages 7-17. More traditional summer camp activities are integrated into the iD Tech Camps curriculum.

How do I register?

Registering online is the fastest way to get into a program. Choose your path and we’ll guide you through registration: All Teen Programs or iD Tech Camps for Kids

What if the curriculum is too easy or too hard once the course starts?

Academy programs are taught in small, personalized classes. Instructors are able to work closely with each student to customize the course curriculum to each student’s skill and experience level. Whether you are a beginner or extremely advanced, our instructors find fun and challenging ways to develop your tech skills. If you have a particular goal or project idea, instructors will work with you and guide you.

Do I need to bring any computer equipment to camp?

No, you do not need to a bring personal computer to camp. Each student is provided with a computer at camp; you’ll never have to share a computer. We supply all the hardware, software and course materials.

What “off-computer” activities are there?

Our teen programs are academic camps, but we also create a fun summer experience. The intensive curriculum and lab time are balanced out with cool excursions, trips to nearby studios and fun down time activities like gaming tournaments. Students may participate in organized outdoor sports, movie nights, campus tours, and more. Since this is a teen-only program, we try to allow students as much freedom as possible in shaping their own weeks – but students are supervised.

Do you provide transportation for students? What about Carpooling?

We do not arrange transportation for our students. For your convenience, we have created a carpool app located in My Account which is available to all iD clients after registering. All transportation to and from camp is the responsibility of the parent/guardian. There are child transportation services that past students have utilized, which can be found through a web search. We are not affiliated with any such company and thus cannot be held accountable for clients’ use of outside transportation services.
