VR Game Design with Unity and Meta Quest

  • Price: Starting at $1,249

  • Skill Level: Beginner-Advanced
  • Format: iD Tech Camps | Small-Group, On-Campus

About This Course

The best game creators are the ones who play them, and virtual reality breaks the boundary of what it truly means to play games. From mega-hits like Beat Saber to emerging technologies that invite players across the globe to play, chat, and live together in a virtual world, VR is an expanding industry.

Step directly into your game with virtual reality and Meta Quest—an all-in-one VR system. You’ll pair it with Unity, an industry-standard game engine, to learn the basics of coding and create your own interactive experience. Use Unity’s built-in XR Interaction Toolkit to design your own game mechanics, implement interactivity, and critically analyze your game’s components. Your VR experience can be whatever you envision, whether that’s an underwater exploration of sunken ships or a ghost-hunting adventure at an abandoned mansion. You could even animate and rig characters using Adobe’s Mixamo software to bring your custom-made characters to life! Start by grayboxing and concepting out your level designs, then bring the final product into your VR headset where you can see, hear, and lose yourself in the immersion of 360 audio and video. All of your models, designs, and levels will go home with you so you can continue building an immersive, imaginative virtual realm!

Topics Covered

  • Use game objects, models, and levels to create VR environments
  • Program interactions with C#
  • Think in 3D to create augmented reality experiences
  • Develop coding and design skills

Course Format

This course is part of a weeklong summer camp running Monday through Friday. Learning sessions will be held in a lab on an inspiring university campus. Your child will be placed within a small group and guided by an experienced instructor. Daily schedules are balanced and allow for outdoor and recreational activities. Day and overnight options are available based on location.

Sample Schedule

Here’s a sample of what a week in this course could look like. Keep in mind students will progress at varying paces, and this is meant to serve as an outline of key materials and the overall experience.

Students will learn how to use and navigate Unity and the VR headset. They’ll start with building a car prefab and creating their first Unity project.

Next, students will explore coding fundamentals by writing scripts with Visual Studio code in C#. Then, they’ll step into the world of Voxel art and design their own models and art assets.

Diving further into coding, students will write functions and return types. They’ll learn how to add VR movement teleportation. By the end of the day, students will have designed their own carnival game with moving parts and a moveable player.

Building off their VR game design skills, students will customize their project by adding more art assets, game mechanics, and animations to bring their game to life.

Time to wrap up! Students will add their finishing touches and showcase all of their work from the week with their peers.

Portfolio-Boosting Diploma & Transcript

At the conclusion of your child's course, they will receive an official iD Tech diploma and course transcript outlining the skills they learned over the course of the week.

FAQ

Virtual reality (VR) is an immersive, simulated world that users can interact with, often by using hardware like a Meta Quest headset.

The benefits of VR and AR for teens include building knowledge for a rapidly growing industry, exploring the new frontier of apps and gaming, opening doors to a new generation of entrepreneurship and ecommerce, and harnessing tech that can help others.

While we are a tech program with the goal of transforming your child’s interests into real-world STEM skills, we are also a summer camp. Simply put, camp is a balance of learning and fun! Students learn in small groups in labs on a prestigious college campus and from expert instructors who are trained to inspire and engage.

Day camps kick off with icebreakers and team-building before jumping into coursework for most of the morning. When it’s time for lunch, your child will walk from the computer lab to the dining hall as they take in the beauty of campus. Students return to the learning labs in the afternoon for more coursework, followed by an afternoon break where they will have the chance to take part in outdoor game time and more campus discovery before wrapping up with instruction!

Overnighters work until dinner, and are then off to create deeper connections and memories while gaming, watching movies, and more. All together, days and nights are filled with learning and adventure that builds lifelong friendships.

Yes, this course is designed for beginner to advanced students. Our small class size ensures that each student receives individual attention and has the freedom to learn at their own pace. Instructors are trained to be in tune with students’ unique needs and provide a personalized learning experience.

In addition to valuable tech skills, kids and teens leave camp with new relationships, resilience, critical thinking opportunities, and an even greater love for tech (if that’s possible!).

At the conclusion of your child's course, they will receive a transcript outlining everything they learned over the week. They’ll also take home an iD Tech t-shirt, water bottle, and a USB with their course project files, along with access to installation and setup guides so they can continue working at their own pace.

Please note, Meta Quest headsets are used in this course but their purchase is not included in course tuition. Thus, headsets won't be taken home by students.

Yes! You can register today for as little as $250 per student, and pay the balance in convenient monthly installments. You can save $50 by registering for multiple sessions, and you can earn $25 in credit for each new friend referral (your friend saves $25 when they sign up too!).

As courses frequently sell out, we recommend registering early to secure your child’s spot. You can make unlimited changes - with no fees - up to 14 days before the start of your session. If you need to cancel, you will receive a refund of the amount paid, less the payment plan fee (if applicable) and the deposit of $250 per week. No refunds are provided for cancellations made within 14 days of the start of your session.

If your child will be bringing a phone to camp, they’ll be able to access their device to update you on their adventures and take selfies with their new friends during break times.

While many kids can’t stop talking about their days at camp, others are kids of few words. Our camp staff are here to help, taking pictures of campers in action! Our photos page is regularly updated to showcase all of the fun taking place at camp.

During our Friday Family Showcase, loved ones get to see their camper’s final project while interacting with camp staff and learning about the week, skills gained, and more.

With online options including virtual camps, teen academies, and private lessons, there is a program that fits your child’s interest, skill level, goals, and importantly, schedule. Inspiring instructors, customized curriculum, and topics your child can’t get enough of—sound familiar? Everything there is to love about our in-person summer camps, taught online, live by our elite instructors. Learn more
